2024 HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 SE LONG RANGE GOES THE EXTRA MILE

One of the most significant challenges with electric vehicles has been their limited driving range with most unable to exceed 300-miles. However, the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 presents a solution with its Long-Range version providing drivers with greater confidence and convenience on longer journeys.

Design Like its out of a Cartoon

When evaluating the styling of the Ioniq 6, beauty truly lies in the eye of the beholder. Although it shares the same platform and wheelbase as its SUV counterpart, the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 distinguishes itself with a far sleeker and more aerodynamic design. Its futuristic aesthetic evokes a sense of modernity reminiscent of the visionary designs seen in The Jetsons. This emphasis on streamlined styling not only enhances its visual appeal but also contributes to improved aerodynamic efficiency, setting the Ioniq 6 apart as a standout model in the realm of electric vehicles.

Going the Distance

Despite its distinct appearance from the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 shares the same E-GMP platform and 77.4 kWh battery. Our test model, the entry-level SE, starts at $37,500, offering a range of 240 miles and producing 149 horsepower. Upgrading to the Long-Range version introduces a more powerful 168 kW electric motor, delivering 225 horsepower and extending the range to over 360 miles. Additionally, much like the Ioniq 5, there is a dual motor option available, which enhances performance to 320 horsepower but reduces the range to approximately 315 miles.

Electric vehicles are less predictable than their combustion engine counterparts, as various factors significantly influence their performance. For instance, using the air conditioning can reduce the range by approximately 10%, with further adjustments affecting this percentage based on desired comfort levels. Similarly, driving habits play a crucial role; aggressive driving can deplete the battery rapidly. Consequently, managing these variables is essential for optimizing the range and efficiency of an electric vehicle.

Likes: Decent range, supportive interior setting

To be fair to the Ioniq 6, I must admit that I didn’t closely monitor its range. Electric cars, in general, give me range anxiety regardless of their stated mileage, as I constantly fear being stranded. Consequently, I habitually plug the car in every night upon returning home. Additionally, if a charging station is available at the office, I make sure to take advantage of it. This routine helps mitigate my anxiety and ensures that the vehicle is always fully charged and ready to go.

Just Quick Enough

On the driving scale, the Ioniq 6 offers a relatively standard experience that isn’t going to knock your socks off. The single motor delivers sufficient power to ensure adequate acceleration without breaking your neck. Its still decently quick by modern car terms, but not nearly as quick as its dual motor upgrade. The ride quality is reasonably comfortable, and the 18-inch wheels effectively absorb most bumps and road noise. In terms of handling, the Ioniq 6 demonstrates competent steering, providing a smooth and responsive experience when navigating corners.

Interior General Basics

Inside the entry-level SE, the Ioniq 6 exudes a basic, no-frills ambiance. The cloth seats are comfortably supportive and come with heating, while the driver’s seat is power-adjustable, though it lacks a memory setting. The cabin features two 12.3-inch displays, but they do not support wireless phone pairing. The interior styling is somewhat bland, with noticeable hard plastics. However, the vehicle excels in safety features, including blind-spot monitoring and Hyundai’s excellent lane-keeping assist. Although Highway Drive Assist is not available on the SE, it still offers intelligent cruise control, which performs exceptionally well.

Dislikes: Interior feels low budgeted, trunk space not very big, not very enthusiastic to drive.

While the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 has its imperfections it is an impressive machine that addresses one of the most significant challenges of electric vehicles: limited driving range. And for those that love a good easter egg, a notable feature is the steering wheel’s four-dot Morse code for “H,” which glows when the headlights are on and indicates charging levels when plugged in. This unique detail, along with its overall performance and design, makes the Hyundai Ioniq 6 a compelling choice in the electric vehicle market.
