2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata Continues to Stay True to its Roots

I don’t know what it is about the MX-5, it never seems to find its way to my office during that perfect season where we can go out of a drive in the mountains with the roof down. When it first launched in 2016 it landed dead set in middle of winter and then in 2017 right smack in the middle of our triple digit temperature summer. So, when I was offered a refreshed variant for 2025, of course it had to be winter again. That’s okay, with heated seats and cozy jacket, I’ll muster through it.

Performance Boost

In an era where our perceptions are heavily influenced by the allure of horsepower and torque figures, we often mistakenly regard anything below as inferior. Enter the Mazda MX-5, which has recently elevated its power output from a commendable 155 horsepower to an impressive 181. This enhancement not only refines an already exceptional engine but also serves as a reminder that in the realm of automotive performance one might argue that moderation has its merits.

The horsepower was increased a couple of years ago; however, for the 2025 model, there have been subtle updates to the details such as the headlights and taillights. While the differences may be difficult to discern at first glance, the daytime running lights have been integrated into the headlight housing, and the rear taillights feature a more distinctive LED design. Oh, and the tailpipe got rubbed out for a polished head.

Interior Snuggles

Entering the cockpit can present a challenge, especially as I start to creep into the middle age category that some generations start to deem as “ew, boomer.” However, once settled inside, the design reveals its thoughtful engineering, as it should since it is still the same as before. Every element is meticulously crafted with the driver in mind. The pedals are positioned closely for optimal heel-to-toe shifting, while the gear shifter is conveniently within arm’s reach. The slim steering wheel is ergonomically placed, and the bucket seats provide a supportive embrace without feeling constricting. Additionally, the gauges are perfectly positioned for easy visibility, and the overall sightlines are excellent, allowing the driver a clear view of both the gracefully arched hood and the road ahead.

The interior design, while beginning to show signs of age reminiscent of Mazda’s previous generation, continues to exude a pleasing ambiance. High-quality soft-touch materials are generously used throughout, complemented by body-color matching panels that create a warm and inviting atmosphere within the cabin. Technological enhancements include a larger display screen compared to its predecessor, yet it is thoughtfully integrated in a way that does not overwhelm the overall space, maintaining a balance between functionality and comfort.

Driving Bliss

I must admit, I was not particularly fond of the previous generation Miata; I struggled to understand the fervor surrounding it and what elevated it to the status of one of the all-time greats. While its handling was commendable, I felt its performance fell short of expectations. To me, a sports car’s essence lies in how it carries itself—handling is merely one facet of the equation, and without adequate power, what’s the point? However, Mazda has remained true to the MX-5 Miata’s core values, achieving an optimal 50/50 weight distribution. The power delivery is now immediate, enhanced by a well-weighted clutch and a mid-range torque boost that results in more responsive acceleration. Additionally, the Grand Touring model features a limited-slip differential, Bilstein shocks, and Brembo brakes—previously reserved for the Club edition.

Driving the MX-5 is like playing with an exuberant kitten: it demands your constant attention while consistently bringing joy to your experience. The power is effortlessly channeled through its exceptional six-speed gearbox, characterized by engaging short throws and a compact lever that invites spirited driving. It corners with remarkable precision, changing direction like rabid squirrel, encouraging you to push the limits and accelerate just a bit harder. Mazda intentionally designed a subtle body motion within the chassis, enhancing the driver’s connection to the road and providing a tangible sensation in the corners. Frankly, if you’re having a rough day, taking this spirited little 2.0-liter for a spin will surely lift your spirits, as its lively revs and infectious energy are guaranteed to elicit laughter.

There are few competitors in today’s market that remotely offer the same level of entertainment for under thirty thousand dollars, but the Toyota GR86 doesn’t come with a retractable top. It’s easy to understand why the MX-5 has earned its place as one of the world’s most iconic vehicles, only now with a slightly better recipe.
