V.I.P. LUXURY VALUE: 2024 KIA CARNIVAL SX PRESTIGE

Imagine yourself sitting on a private jet cocooned in a luxury seat made of Italian leather with your feet up and just before you take a sip of that champagne, you open your eyes to find that your surrounded by chaos, flying fruit loops and a toddler kicking the back of your seat. At least that is what I imagine when I put myself in the shoes of the average minivan owner…

I’m sure that is not the case at all and I’m just over dramatizing certain scenarios, but when it comes the Kia and their all-new Carnival minivan, this very well may be the luxury liner of minivans.

All The Right Looks

Flaunting a new name, the Carnival was previously known as the Sedona, but I guess Carnival sounded classier? Either way, the Carnival has been designed to impress and throw out the conventional minivan design for something that looks like what everyone wants, an SUV. But really, once you add on two sliding doors and a trunk big enough to park a U-Haul trailer inside, Kia, you’re not fooling anybody. And, who cares that it’s a minivan, it’s got a snazzy textured grille, shiny bedazzled trim and blacked out wheels and a whole lot of convivence to make that family life much more tolerable.

Like Seating in a Private Jet

Peeking inside, it’s clear that Kia has truly excelled in creating the Carnival, making it a premium and sophisticated environment. The Carnival, like all contemporary minivans, offers ample space and comfort for passengers in every row. However, in its highest trim level, the SX Prestige, with every available feature included, the Carnival transcends its role as a mere family vehicle to an executive lounge on wheels, complete with luxurious amenities. This transformation raises the intriguing question of Kia’s target audience for this opulent minivan. Who exactly did they envision as the ideal occupant of such a refined space?

Despite the lack of luxurious quilted pillows found in the Chrysler Pacifica, the Carnival’s upscale interior  boasts stunning Tuscan Umber two-tone leather seating. The second-row seats are upgraded to VIP-style lounge seats, equipped with fully functional recliners, power controls, and both heated and cooled seating options. Naturally, a modern minivan wouldn’t be complete without entertainment features. The second-row passengers are treated to two seat-mounted touch screen displays. Notably, for the first time in a minivan, these screens include screen-mirroring technology, allowing passengers to share video content directly from their phones to the display screens. This blend of luxury and technology offers an enticing yet unusual proposition for families.

Amongst all the glitz and glamour, the Carnival’s long-term durability naturally comes to question. While I don’t have a family myself, it’s logical to wonder whether these sophisticated gadgets and features can withstand the rough treatment from energetic toddlers and destructive 10-year-olds. Imagining power controls for the second-row seats getting soaked with spilled juice and crumbs accumulating in the crevices of the ottomans is not far-fetched. Additionally, these seats, though luxurious, are quite heavy and while they can slide side to side as well as back and forth, maneuvering them is quite cumbersome. Furthermore, they cannot be removed or folded, limiting the Carnivals cargo capacity should you need to transport large items.

Strong Performance Game

As a driver on the other hand, the Carnival shines with its vibrant personality.  Behind the wheel, it carries two digital 12.3-inch customizable displays. And with a 3.5-liter V6 at the tip of your toes, the 290-horsepower engine with its 8-speed automatic transmission will leave a set of tire marks as it scoots from 0-60 in just under 7.0-secionds.

Driving the Carnival is an enjoyable experience, offering smooth gear changes and responsive steering with a satisfying heft. The vehicle feels well-balanced, providing a sense of stability on the road. Riding on 19-inch wheels, the Carnival ensures ample road comfort and minimal noise, thanks to the generous rubber cushioning between the wheels and the pavement. While I appreciate the comfort, I do wish Kia offered a larger wheel option to enhance the sporty appearance of the exterior. Nonetheless, Kia prioritizes comfort, giving the Carnival a pleasant driving experience.

As minivans gradually fade from the automotive landscape, only a few models remain, including the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, and Honda Odyssey. Notably, both the Sienna and the Pacifica have embraced hybrid technology. However, during a recent experience with the Toyota Sienna, it became evident that while the hybrid system excels in everyday commuting, its powertrain struggles when the vehicle is fully loaded with passengers and cargo. In contrast, the Carnival’s powerband however maintains a smooth and composed performance, ensuring that even when the Carnival is packed with people and gear, it delivers reliable power, instilling confidence that it can tackle any hill or demanding drive with ease.

The Costco Value of Minivans

However, with all that power comes some drawbacks. Compared to the Toyota Sienna, the Carnivals fuel consumption is less impressive as we averaged 24.4 mpg’s during our week, despite being two more mpg’s more than the EPA rating. Additionally, it is only offered in front-wheel drive and there is no news whether Kia will offer a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version later down the road. However, in terms of value, the Kia Carnival is where it all is at. A base LX starts at $33,600, nearly $5,000 cheaper than all its competitors. And while the SX Prestige carries a starting price of $46,700, those upgraded optional VIP style seats carry no additional cost, and when all said and done, our example Carnival topped out at $49,480. That is $2,740 cheaper than the Toyota Sienna Platinum, $7,050 cheaper than the Honda Odyssey Elite and a shocking $11,455 cheaper than the Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle Plug-In Hybrid.

Sure, the Kia Carnival SX Prestige might seem too elegant and refined to withstand the rough and tumble of children. However, its premium comforts, impressive performance, and exceptional value for money make it an incredibly compelling choice. The combination of luxurious features and robust capabilities ensures that the Carnival delivers both style and substance. Its ability to provide a sophisticated driving experience without compromising on practicality and affordability makes it a standout option in the minivan market. For families seeking a vehicle that balances elegance and functionality, the Kia Carnival SX Prestige presents an irresistible argument.
