The life of a crossover vehicle can often seem mundane, designed to juggle multiple tasks such as transporting energetic children, safeguarding a delicate volcano science project, and rushing to a board meeting—all within its versatile infrastructure. This adaptability is why crossovers sell in bulk, much like essential supplies at Costco during a global crisis. The Volkswagen Atlas exemplifies this jack-of-all-trades nature and, as Volkswagen’s top performer, was due for an upgrade.  

Bold Refreshments

Aesthetic appeal is subjective, and if you appreciated the previous model, you might find the new Atlas equally, if not more, attractive. The redesigned Atlas features smoother, more refined lines, enhancing its overall desirability. Updates to the rear include stylish new LED taillights and a pair of faux exhaust tip housings. Inside, most of the interior remains familiar, with notable enhancements such as an updated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad in higher-end models, and an improved adaptive cruise control system that now includes start/stop capabilities.  

Upscaling the Interior

Facing the fierce competition in its segment, the Atlas now boasts a more refined and premium cabin space. The interior has been significantly upgraded, featuring a larger touchscreen display that enhances both functionality and aesthetics. The addition of natural-looking wood accents brings a touch of elegance, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.  

In terms of space, the Atlas offers ample room for passengers and cargo. The third row is surprisingly spacious, accommodating adults comfortably, which is not always the case with mid-size SUVs. The flexibility of the seating arrangement allows for various configurations to maximize cargo space when needed, without compromising passenger comfort.

Volkswagen has focused on modernizing the design, incorporating high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The buttons and switchgear are now more robust, reflecting the brand’s commitment to durability and German engineering excellence. The soft-touch surfaces and genuine leather upholstery elevate the overall feel, moving away from the previous reliance on synthetic materials. With these enhancements, the Atlas presents itself not only as a versatile and reliable crossover but also as a vehicle that offers a sophisticated and comfortable driving experience.  

However, all this tech-forward swagger comes with its own set of challenges. While innovation is commendable, the Atlas’ touch-sensitive control panel can complicate what should be simple, transforming ease of use into a bit of a puzzle. The wireless phone connection occasionally froze, requiring frequent system resets. Although the display screen is generously sized, its navigation could be more user-friendly. These minor setbacks, though, don’t overshadow the overall progress and improvements made in the latest model.  

Out with the V6 and in with the Turbocharger

Under the hood, the Atlas has streamlined its engine options, moving away from the V-6 and previous turbocharged four-cylinder engines to offer a single, efficient turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Despite the reduction in choices, this engine should not be underestimated. It delivers a robust 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, ensuring a smooth and capable ride that meets various driving demands with ease. However, it would be our recommendation to option up the 4Motion All-Wheel Drive, as the Front-Wheel Drive, like our example, presented constant tire spin and noticeable torque steer due to its significant amount of torque.

The ride quality of the Atlas is another strong point. While it may not deliver the same thrill as some sportier competitors like the Mazda CX-90, its cushy ride and serene cabin offer their own brand of comfort. The suspension system effectively absorbs road imperfections, providing a smooth and pleasant driving experience. Road noise is minimal, allowing for a quieter cabin environment. 

The Atlas doesn’t just focus on engine performance; it also prioritizes safety and convenience. The improved adaptive cruise control, which now includes start/stop capabilities, adds a layer of ease to long drives. Additionally, the Atlas offers a suite of driver assistance features such as lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking. These features contribute to a more secure driving experience, making the Atlas a reliable companion for families and individuals alike. 

 In conclusion, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas stands as a strong contender in the crowded mid-size SUV market. Its blend of practicality, advanced technology, refined interior, and improved performance make it a compelling choice for those seeking a versatile vehicle. While it has its minor flaws, the overall package it offers is impressive, and the enhancements in the latest model year address many of the shortcomings of its predecessor.
