2024 TOYOTA TUNDRA, MORE THAN A WORKHORSE

It’s hard not to take advantage sometimes being a car reviewer, where most people may need to rent a truck to haul a load to the dump or help a friend move some furniture, we, simply make a phone call and see if we can put one on the schedule… and that’s just what we did. At the time, the only truck available was a 2024 Toyota Tundra, and since it has been a couple of years since we’ve had some behind the wheel time, we were happy to accept the offering.

HYBRID PERFORMANCE

Our ride was the mid-tier Limited, featuring a spacious CrewMax cab and a 5.5-foot bed, starting at $55,850. While it’s not gunning for the ultra-luxury market like the Capstone or 1794 Edition, the Tundra Limited doesn’t shy away from delivering comfort, capability, and performance blending rugged functionality with just the right amount of upscale features, like the engine under the hood. The standard Limited comes with the non-hybrid 3.4-liter twin turbo V6. However, for $3300 more, Toyota will bolt a hybrid motor on, call it the Hybrid Max and will deliver an impressive 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission, the Tundra moves with surprising agility for a full-size truck. The hybrid system seamlessly bridges any gaps in power, making acceleration effortless and highway cruising a breeze.

Fuel economy, as expected with a vehicle of this size, isn’t groundbreaking, but I managed to achieve around 18.5 MPG combined, which is respectable given its performance. The hybrid system provides a slight edge over the non-hybrid variant in terms of efficiency, but it’s clear the Tundra is still very much a truck in its fuel consumption habits.

One of the first things we noticed was the ride quality. The Tundra Limited comes equipped with 20-inch wheels, which provide a smoother ride than the larger 22-inch wheels found on higher trims. Handling remains light, but there’s enough feedback to remind you that you’re driving a truck, not a crossover.

PREMIUM APPLICATIONS

When it comes to the interior, the Tundra Limited strikes a nice balance between functionality and comfort. The cabin is well-appointed with quality materials, though it doesn’t reach the opulence of the 1794 Edition or Capstone’s leather and wood trim. Instead, it offers a more understated, yet still premium, environment with leather-trimmed seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a well-designed dashboard that’s dominated by a large, user-friendly infotainment system.

Toyota’s latest infotainment system is as intuitive as ever, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a suite of cameras that make parking and maneuvering this large vehicle much easier. The Tundra Limited also comes with an array of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The 2024 Toyota Tundra Limited delivers a well-rounded package, seamlessly blending comfort, technology, and capability. While it may not boast the luxury of its higher-end siblings, it offers more than enough for those seeking a truck that effortlessly handles both daily commutes and weekend getaways. In our time behind the wheel, it reaffirmed why the Tundra continues to be a standout in its class—sometimes, it’s just hard not to like it more than we should.
